Inside Davenport
Downtown Davenport holds a 49-acre historic district with 33 contributing buildings, and historic masonry with low-slope roofs dominates, so access and noise get planned building by building. The Village of East Davenport is a 72-acre historic district whose buildings mostly date from 1848 to 1910, and the 1901 fire that destroyed 20 acres of it is why the older masonry and wood-frame roofs there get a careful look.
The River Drive waterfront carries flood exposure along with roof weather. Davenport has no permanent flood wall, and the 2019 barrier failure put water about six feet deep over roughly 15 square blocks of downtown. Out at Davenport Municipal Airport, the 86 mph derecho gust of August 2020 is the number to plan around.
Corridors and the Industrial Park
The Kimberly Road corridor runs about 6.1 miles of stores, offices and apartments, and passes NorthPark Mall. Brady Street connects downtown to I-80 and passes Palmer College of Chiropractic along the way. The Eastern Iowa Industrial Center in northwest Davenport brings together large plants, a rail transload and warehouse buildings on a 346-acre park.
